🕒 The 5 Essential English Tenses
1. Present Simple
Use: Habits, routines, and permanent facts.
- Affirmative: Subject + Verb (−s/−es for he/she/it)
- Negative: Subject + do not / does not + Verb (base form)
- Question: Do / Does + Subject + Verb (base form)?
Examples:
- I work in an office.
- He does not eat meat.
- Do you speak English?
2. Present Continuous
Use: Actions happening right now or around the present moment.
- Affirmative: Subject + am / is / are + Verb-ing
- Negative: Subject + am / is / are + not + Verb-ing
- Question: Am / Is / Are + Subject + Verb-ing?
Examples:
- I am studying for my exam.
- They are not watching TV right now.
- Is she listening to music?
3. Past Simple
Use: Finished actions in the past.
- Affirmative: Subject + Verb-ed (or irregular form)
- Negative: Subject + did not + Verb (base form)
- Question: Did + Subject + Verb (base form)?
Examples:
- We visited London last year.
- I did not see the movie yesterday.
- Did you go to the party?
4. Future with “Going to”
Use: Plans and intentions for the future.
- Affirmative: Subject + am / is / are + going to + Verb
- Negative: Subject + am / is / are + not + going to + Verb
- Question: Am / Is / Are + Subject + going to + Verb?
Examples:
- I am going to travel to Brazil.
- He is not going to play football today.

5. Present Perfect
Use: Experiences or actions that happened at an unspecified time in the past.
- Affirmative: Subject + have / has + Past Participle (−ed or 3rd column)
- Negative: Subject + have / has + not + Past Participle
- Question: Have / Has + Subject + Past Participle?
Examples:
- I have been to Italy twice.
- She has not finished her homework.
