🕒 The 5 Essential English Tenses

1. Present Simple

Use: Habits, routines, and permanent facts.

  • Affirmative: Subject + Verb (−s/−es for he/she/it)
  • Negative: Subject + do not / does not + Verb (base form)
  • Question: Do / Does + Subject + Verb (base form)?

Examples:

  • I work in an office.
  • He does not eat meat.
  • Do you speak English?

2. Present Continuous

Use: Actions happening right now or around the present moment.

  • Affirmative: Subject + am / is / are + Verb-ing
  • Negative: Subject + am / is / are + not + Verb-ing
  • Question: Am / Is / Are + Subject + Verb-ing?

Examples:

  • I am studying for my exam.
  • They are not watching TV right now.
  • Is she listening to music?

3. Past Simple

Use: Finished actions in the past.

  • Affirmative: Subject + Verb-ed (or irregular form)
  • Negative: Subject + did not + Verb (base form)
  • Question: Did + Subject + Verb (base form)?

Examples:

  • We visited London last year.
  • I did not see the movie yesterday.
  • Did you go to the party?

4. Future with “Going to”

Use: Plans and intentions for the future.

  • Affirmative: Subject + am / is / are + going to + Verb
  • Negative: Subject + am / is / are + not + going to + Verb
  • Question: Am / Is / Are + Subject + going to + Verb?

Examples:

  • I am going to travel to Brazil.
  • He is not going to play football today.
  • Are they going to cook dinner?

5. Present Perfect

Use: Experiences or actions that happened at an unspecified time in the past.

  • Affirmative: Subject + have / has + Past Participle (−ed or 3rd column)
  • Negative: Subject + have / has + not + Past Participle
  • Question: Have / Has + Subject + Past Participle?

Examples:

  • I have been to Italy twice.
  • She has not finished her homework.
  • Have you ever tried sushi?
